Last Week of Field!

In the last week of field I did a lot of copy work to prepare my cooperating teacher for next year. As it was not the funnest job I did learn that to be organized really does pay off. I was sad to leave my classroom. My teacher and my students were really great. I was welcome the day I walked in. There are definite aspects from her classroom that I will use in my own. I have always liked the card flipping for discipline. I also liked all of her organization. As I was involved with that I do know that it does pay off to be organized in the classroom. As it was sad to leave the classroom I am excited to be finishing up the school year and graduate and begin my student teaching in the fall. It will be a real chance to put all the things I have learned to action!

Sixth Week of Field.

This past Monday I taught a full class lesson. The topic was sound. I had planned notes and activities. Well it didn’t go as well as I hoped it to. The notes were a little to advanced for 2nd graders and I realized this during the lesson. I was trying to explain the notes in simpler terms. My class did enjoy the activity that I planned so I was happy that payed off. It went ok but I feel that I can learn more from lessons gone bad then lessons gone well.

The rest of the week I did preparatory work for my teacher. I was making materials that she will use for next years class.

Fifth Week of Field!

After a long spring break I finally returned to Kean! The students were really happy to see me. On Monday I made copies of papers for the teacher. I also worked with an individual student on his number scroll. The students are required to keep a number scroll going starting at 100 and this student had gone up to 2,000. On Tuesday I would one-on-one with a student on ball park estimates. The student was having difficulty rounding up or down. She understood the concept but became frustrated. It took patience from me to keep the lesson going. I also created a math worksheet for my teacher on the computer. Wednesday’s activities included taking a reading record. I called each student out in the hallway and had them read from a book for 1 min. I gave side notes for the teacher if the student had difficulties on any words or if they read exceptionally well. On Thursday I was responsible for copying journal topics from this calendar year onto next years calendar.

Fourth Week of Field

This past week my cooperating teacher gave me a lot more freedom. It was great. I administered a spelling test. The students responded very well. I did have two girls who started talking during the test and I handled it well. The teacher did chime in and say that if anymore people talked I had the responsibility of going over and marking -1 on their test for talking. I also got to lead the class in making note cards for their presentations. I needed to explain the reason we make note cards and then lead them through a  presentation using a note card. I felt that the students understood and were involved in the process. On Thursday I worked with an individual student in which we worked mainly on his note card for Tiger Woods. He wanted to write sentences and I had to explain to him that he just needed to put little reminders of what he wanted to say. It was a struggle but we got through it in the end.

On Tuesday of this week my students will be presenting their speeches. I am very excited to see their presentations because they have really worked hard.

Third Week of Field!

This week was a short week due to no school on Monday. On Tuesday of this week I worked with my students on their research packets. The packets were due on Wednesday so I was working with student’s individually and who were not finished. On Wednesday I helped the students with a poem about their famous African American. The poem format was the same for each student in which there were 6 lines to fill out. On Thursday my teacher was not there. The students were in special when I first arrived and when they returned from special we as a class went to a jazz choir concert. I enjoy going to extra activities during the school day.

A couple of weeks ago I found a really interesting article on MSNBC in which it was covering voting in schools. Because the election year is upon us it is a teaching topic that can and is really relevant to the students. Students can understand the importance of voting, and it would be fun to hold an election in the school.

Second Week of Field

This past week we had two snow days. On Wednesday I worked with individual students on their research project. I am finding it more difficult than I thought to find information on the internet that is kid friendly. It is difficult for the students to read the information without the help of an adult. On Thursday we had our class Valentines party. It was a lot of fun but there were a lot of mothers there to help. It was a little overwhelming the amount of people that were in the classroom. It was learning experience b/c it shows that sometimes there can be to much help.

First Week of Field

So this past week was the first week of field. My advising teacher is very nice and very organized. Her room is very inviting with many colors and ever wall space is utilized. I always like coming to field in the second semester because the class has all of the classroom rules down pat. This week I mostly worked with the students on research projects. It was very exciting to watch them research. They would get very excited when they found a fact about their famous African American.
